When is Census 2020?
Census Day is April 1, 2020, but the
online tool will start accepting responses in mid-March.
Why is the Census important to me?
The Census is extremely important because it gathers information on the population of the United States. The final data are used to determine the allocation of federal dollars to states, cities, and counties. The information also helps citizens and policymakers understand demographic, economic, and geographic trends needed to inform critical business decisions.
Why does the 2020 Census matter for my school?
A complete count matters a lot to students and schools.
The 2020 count will drive decisions regarding the allocation of more than $675 billion in federal funding to states and communities each year. That includes support for school programs and services such as:
- Special education
- Free and reduced-price lunch
- Reducing class size
- Classroom technology
- Teacher training
- After-school programs
- Head Start
The funding also supports services that influence students’ readiness for learning, such as maternal and child health programs and housing, heating, and food assistance.
