myDCSD Funding Needs


Douglas County School District is home to 64,000 students who attend 89 public schools. Covering 850 total square miles, our school district is the third-largest in Colorado. We have a lot to celebrate in DCSD!

Like many school districts across our state and country, DCSD faces many funding challenges. We must address funding needs to ensure that each and every one of our students continues to have access to the best possible public education within safe and comfortable learning environments.

Update on 5A and 5B

I want to sincerely thank our amazing community for joining together over the past few months in support of ballot initiatives 5A: Mill Levy Override and 5B: Bond. We came so close! As of this morning, 5A received over 49% support and 5B received almost 47%. While there are still votes to be counted, it is unlikely that the results will change. However, I believe that we should be celebrating the amazing gains in support we have made in such a short time!

Board of Education Mill Levy Override and Bond Follow Up - November 2022

Thank you for joining us in efforts to pass Douglas County School District ballot initiatives 5A (Mill Levy Override) and 5B (Bond). While unofficial election results point to both measures falling short (5A was defeated 49.4% to 50.6%), we appreciate how our staff, parents, and community came together to educate Douglas County voters about our funding challenges.

Board of Education Authorizes Bond, MLO for November Ballot

The Douglas County School District Board of Education (BOE) has authorized Mill Levy Override (MLO) and Bond questions for the 2022 ballot. At the August 23 meeting, the BOE unanimously voted 7-0 to place before voters a $60 million MLO and a $450 million Bond.

Additional Funding Would Help DCSD to Provide:

  • More Competitive Pay for Teachers and Staff
    Provide pay that is more competitive with other school districts so we can retain our wonderful teachers and staff. Currently, teachers in a neighboring school district can make, on average, $18,000 more per year compared to in DCSD. In addition, currently, other staff such as Educational Assistants, Bus Drivers, and Campus Security Specialists can earn higher wages at local retail stores and restaurants. 

  • Safe, Efficient, Quality Learning Environments
    Update and repair our school buildings to provide safe, efficient, quality learning environments for our students and staff.

  • New Neighborhood Schools
    Construct three new neighborhood elementary schools and create additions to two existing middle schools to reduce crowding and plan for growth.

New neighborhood schools would be constructed in Crystal Valley (Castle Rock), The Canyons (Castle Pines), and Sterling Ranch (near Highlands Ranch). And additions would be constructed to expand Mesa Middle School (Castle Rock), and Sierra Middle School (Parker).

If DCSD were to pass a $60 Million Mill Levy Override (Ballot Initiative 5A) and a $450 Million Bond (Ballot Initiative 5B), it would cost taxpayers $1 per week per $100,000 of assessed home value.

Outside Agencies

Complaints regarding violations of Title VI, (race, national origin), Title IX (sex, gender), Section 504/ADA (handicap or disability), may be filed directly with the Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education, 1244 North Speer Blvd., Suite 310, Denver, CO 80204. Complaints regarding violations of Title VII (employment) and the ADEA (prohibiting age discrimination in employment) may be filed directly with the Federal Office of Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 303 E. 17th Ave., Suite 510, Denver, CO 80202, or the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, 1560 Broadway, Suite 1050, Denver, CO 80202.

NOTICE OF DESTRUCTION OF SPECIAL EDUCATION RECORDS

Special Education records which have been collected by Douglas County School District related to the identification, evaluation, educational placement, or the provision of special education in the district, must be maintained under state and federal laws for the period of five (5) years after special education services have ended for the student. Special education services end when the student is no longer eligible for services, graduates, or completes his/her educational program at age 21, or moves from the district. This notification is to inform parents/guardians and former students of Douglas County School District's intent to destroy the special education records of students who exited special education services as of June 30, 2016. These records will be destroyed in accordance with state law unless the parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student notifies the school district otherwise. After five years, the records are no longer useful to the district, but may be useful to the parent/guardian or former student in applying for social security benefits, rehabilitation services, college entrance, etc. The parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student may request a copy of the records by requesting the records by email to [email protected]
