Who or what inspired you to enter the field of education?
Many teachers over the course of my education inspired me to get into education. Typically they were those people who took the time to really get to know me, challenge me in new ways, or inspire me to take a risk. They were educators who believed in me and often saw something in me that I did not see myself at first.

Did you follow a traditional or unconventional path to become a principal?
Mostly traditional-- though I was given the principalship opportunity a little sooner than I had expected last fall when the former FSE principal, Dr. Kelli Smith, received a promotion with the district. When she left, I was named the Interim Principal at Flagstone last October, then was hired to be the permanent principal of FSE last spring!

If you could write a book about your career path, what would you title it and why?
New Beginnings. I feel like I am constantly evolving in my role and in my leadership capacities, and I am always learning something new, every single year, whether I am in a new role or not!

What is a work-related accomplishment that you are the most proud of?
I took over the principalship in the midst of a pandemic and in the middle of a school year.  I am most proud of being able to maintain the incredible and supportive culture and climate that is Flagstone.  Ensuring that people are honored, valued, and trusted as professionals are one of my most important priorities as a leader because staff that feels valued work hard and are committed. And that has an immediate and positive impact on our most valued customers... our STUDENTS! 

How do you relax and regroup after a stressful day?
Spending time outside with my family is my happy place! After a stressful day, I like to listen to music on my back deck with my husband Phil, watch my kids play in the yard, and visit and catch up with neighbors.

What do you like most about working in public education?
The kids, of course! They bring me joy and remind me of my "why." No matter how crazy busy the days get, our students can make me smile, laugh, and learn something every day! They truly are what makes me excited to get out of bed every morning.

What is your favorite way to show staff appreciation?
I believe that knowing your staff personally and finding time to connect/check in with them goes a long way toward showing your appreciation for them. Simple recognition and genuine appreciation for the little things they do every day are hugely important and make a big difference in fostering relationships and letting staff know they are valued and supported.  It's those little things--I believe--that are worth 1000 times more than a monthly "surprise treats in the lounge" day (although, those help from time to time, too.);o)

What is your favorite way to energize yourself at work?
Getting into classrooms and connecting with kids is the best way to get re-energized at work.  There are always 100 emails to answer, documents to sign, and meetings to hold; but whenever I'm feeling like a pick-me-up, I will walk around the building and pop into classrooms to chat with kids about their learning!

What do you like to do outside of work?
I absolutely love being outside. When the weather permits, my family and I love to camp, wakeboard/wake surf, and just spend time together outdoors. I also love reading, catching up on my most recent favorite Netflix series, and getting together with friends and family.

Complaints regarding violations of Title VI, (race, national origin), Title IX (sex, gender), Section 504/ADA (handicap or disability), may be filed directly with the Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education, 1244 North Speer Blvd., Suite 310, Denver, CO 80204. Complaints regarding violations of Title VII (employment) and the ADEA (prohibiting age discrimination in employment) may be filed directly with the Federal Office of Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 303 E. 17th Ave., Suite 510, Denver, CO 80202, or the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, 1560 Broadway, Suite 1050, Denver, CO 80202.


Special Education records which have been collected by Douglas County School District related to the identification, evaluation, educational placement, or the provision of special education in the district, must be maintained under state and federal laws for the period of five (5) years after special education services have ended for the student. Special education services end when the student is no longer eligible for services, graduates, or completes his/her educational program at age 21, or moves from the district. This notification is to inform parents/guardians and former students of Douglas County School District's intent to destroy the special education records of students who exited special education services as of June 30, 2016. These records will be destroyed in accordance with state law unless the parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student notifies the school district otherwise. After five years, the records are no longer useful to the district, but may be useful to the parent/guardian or former student in applying for social security benefits, rehabilitation services, college entrance, etc. The parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student may request a copy of the records by requesting the records at this link ( Douglas County School District Transcripts and Records Requests ).
