Frontier Valley Students Enjoy Career Day with Visits from Community Members

Frontier Valley Elementary students studied a variety of careers and jobs during Career Week. Topping off the curriculum was the school’s first-ever Career Day with visits from members of the community including CORE Electric Cooperative, Douglas County Search and Rescue, Parker Center Animal Clinic, and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

A biomedical engineer with Medtronic talked about her job and showed samples of a 3D printed ankle, while Parker Mayor Jeff Toborg gave a lesson on the founding of the Town of Parker and encouraged students to apply for leadership positions like running for student council.

An arborist with Parker Parks and Recreation demonstrated the equipment used for trimming trees. Joanna Cummings with Altitude Sports Nutrition provided samples of bitter melon, jackfruit, rambutans, and dragon fruit.

Elizabeth Van Otten, Frontier Valley’s school counselor, came up with the idea and spearheaded the event.

“The students seemed to have a fun day learning about all these different careers. It also created some nice connections to the community!” said Van Otten.

During the career exploration curriculum study at the school, third-graders create an interest inventory and fifth-graders explore pathways after high school, like career, college, and military.

Special Education records which have been collected by Douglas County School District related to the identification, evaluation, educational placement, or the provision of special education in the district, must be maintained under state and federal laws for the period of five (5) years after special education services have ended for the student. Special education services end when the student is no longer eligible for services, graduates, or completes his/her educational program at age 21, or moves from the district. This notification is to inform parents/guardians and former students of Douglas County School District's intent to destroy the special education records of students who exited special education services as of June 30, 2016. These records will be destroyed in accordance with state law unless the parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student notifies the school district otherwise. After five years, the records are no longer useful to the district, but may be useful to the parent/guardian or former student in applying for social security benefits, rehabilitation services, college entrance, etc. The parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student may request a copy of the records by requesting the records at this link ( Douglas County School District Transcripts and Records Requests ).
